DFO is anticipated to announce a closure of the Northern cod fishery in 3KL for Saturday, Sept 8th. The expected reopening will be September 23rd.
Cod catches have been higher than projected in most areas and that is accounting for an earlier closure than previously expected. The abundance of northern cod is not surprising to harvesters given the strong capelin abundance this season, as well as the prevalence of squid, herring and other fish.
DFO has committed to maintain approximately 25% of the 9,500 MT quota for the period of September 30th onward. This fishery will be available to all license holders as well as those who selected the fall fishery option.
The very high landings of healthy cod is a very positive indicator for the Northern cod stock.
